The Montgomery Sunrise Rotary Club was privileged to have the honor to host a wonderful evening of fine dining honoring Mrs. Lynn Beshear for her commitment to service benefiting her fellow man. For the fourth year we welcomed many esteemed members and noteworthy organizations from the Montgomery community to gather together with us to help roast our honoree. In 2008, our ticket sales, corporate sponsorships and proceeds from our silent auction, helped the Montgomery Sunrise Rotary raise over $10,000 to assist Camp ASCCA in finishing out their 2,800 square foot, fully accessible water playground. The water playground will be the first of it kind at Camp ASCCA.
In May, 2008, we had the privilege to honor Lynn Beshear, the Executive Director of Envision 2020.
Born in Durham, North Carolina, Lynn Beshear moved to Montgomery from Kentucky in 1978. She has been the executive director of Envision 2020 since October of 2000. Envision 2020 is a community-driven strategic planning effort involving citizens and leaders in the Central Alabama counties of Autauga, Elmore, Lowndes, Macon and Montgomery - the River Region. Its purpose is to develop shared goals encompassing all aspects of the region's future and to see that those goals are implemented.
Beshear's education is in nursing, which she has used in her work in the Intensive Care Nursery and the well baby nursery at Duke University Medical Center. While living in Kentucky and after moving to Montgomery, Lynn's focus has been in trying to make a positive difference in the community, both through her nursing skills and as a community volunteer. She is the mother of two daughters and a son and is married to a pediatrician.
Her previous community service to Montgomery includes, but is not limited to, service on the boards of directors of the Montgomery Academy, Montgomery Ballet, Junior League, First United Methodist Church, Junior League of Montgomery, River Region United Way, Community Council, Success by Six, the Advisory Council of the Montgomery Downtown and Riverfront Development Foundation and Alabama Harvest.
Currently, she serves on the boards of directors for the Montgomery Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy and The Alabama Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. She is on the Metro Montgomery YMCA Board, and is chair of the long-range planning process for First United Methodist Church. She has also served on various committees with the Helping Families Initiative.
She was in Class III of both Leadership Alabama and Leadership Montgomery. As a result of her Leadership Montgomery experience, she has worked with groups of students and adults in the area of prejudice reduction/welcoming diversity, having received training from the National Coalition Building Institute.
Lynn has been the recipient of several awards and honors in Montgomery, including among many others, Junior League Sustainer of the Year in 1992 and Leadership Montgomery Distinguised Leadership Alumni Award in 2004. She can now add to the Montgomery Sunrise Rotary Commitment to Service Award to the list!
